Natural Remedies to Prevent the Winter Flu

Summer is in sight, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of the woods when it comes to flu season! Here are a few natural steps you can take to prevent getting sick before the start of summer:

Probiotic: Listen to your gut! Adding a probiotic to your daily dose of vitamins will keep your gut in check and full of good bacteria to support your immune system. We usually think of bacteria as bad, but bacteria can be good as well, especially when it comes to digestion.

Healthy Diet :

Food is medicine! Especially when it comes to Ayurvedic medicine. This ancient practice means incorporating immune-boosting, nutrient dense ingredients into your diet in order to give your body the tools it needs to fight infection and illness naturally. Some of the foods that will help you stay healthy include:

  • brightly coloured fruits and vegetables such as oranges, blueberries, sweet potato, carrot, spinach and broccoli which are loaded with vitamins and minerals.
  • Other foods like garlic contain antiviral, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties thanks to naturally occurring compound called ‘allicin’.
  • Throw in some ginger which contains potent antiviral phytochemicals and mushrooms which are loaded with immune boosting vitamin D.

Nasya Therapy

Nasya therapy is also from the Ayurvedic practice of medicine. This therapy allows you to manually flush out your sinuses with a saline or specially prepared solution. There is plenty of research suggesting that Nasya can help ease cold and flu symptoms like congestion, facial pain and irritated sinuses. The therapy involves specially formulated herbal oil being applied to the nasal passages by an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner to remove congestion and debris which works to promote a clear head!

Oil Pulling

Cleansing your mouth of harmful toxins and bacteria is the ancient practise of oil pulling. Oil pulling involves using organic coconut oil to absorb all the bad stuff in you mouth, including plaque and icky  bacteria. The oil is then discarded, taking all the bad with it, simple!
